Ultimate TKD Challenge 2016
Ultimate Taekwon-Do Challenge
April 9, 2016.
This past weekend the East Coast saw another professionally run ITF Taekwon-Do competition in Tenafly, NJ. The Ultimate Taekwon-Do Challenge hosted by Master Alvin Bernard [OTFA Director] and Team USA TKD & Fitness.
This yearly competition, sanctioned by the OTFA, was a tremendous success and featured Masters, Instructors and Competitors from throughout the country representing the ITF Allied Associations in the USA, as well as Instructors and Competitors from the sunny Island of Jamaica.
Notables in attendance and special thanks go to, Master Ruben Suarez [ITF Umpire Committee Member / NTA-ITF President], Master V.A. Affatigato [OTFA President], Master Brian McNamara [OTFA Vice-President], Master Rodolfo Carrera [ITA Head Instructor], Master Paul Byrne [USTF Instructor], Ms. Joleen Masters [Jamaica TKD Association Secretary], Mr. Jason Mckay [Jamaica National Team Coach] and Mr. Kenneth Edwards [Jamaica National Team Member / Olympic Athlete].
World-class level Taekwon-Do was on display at the tournament with participants competing in numerous events, including Individual Patterns, Individual Sparring, Team Patterns, Specialty Breaking and mixed Exhibition Matches.
Highlights included the use of the new ITF Electronic Scoring System [which worked flawlessly], ITF Certified referees, fully matted rings and beautiful competitor awards. Free prize giveaways were also a major attraction at the Ultimate TKD Challenge, seeing winners walking away with t-shirts, leather focus mitts and kick paddles.
By all accounts, the junior and senior competitors had a positive and satisfying experience. One such experience of note was the awarding of free tournament participation to a number of competitors from various Taekwon-Do Clubs through the Ultimate TKD Challenge Competitor Sponsorship Program, which gives one free entry to every participating school’s most deserving student.
The tournament was run on time and according to schedule with competitor safety of the utmost importance, as no injuries occurred even with the high-spirited and intense competition.
The tournament opened with a fantastic instrumental guitar performance of the USA National Anthem played by Team USA TKD & Fitness black belt, Mr. Scott Lanin and culminated with World Championship competitors: Marc Akda [USA], Anderson Chan [USA], Jose Iglesias [USA], Suzanna Aloian [USA] and Nicholai Reid [Jamaica] closing the tournament with a spectacular display of high-level patterns and sparring.
